The Agricultural Society of Albemarle, organized in 1817, endeavored to educate landowners to such tenets as crop rotation and better methods of raising fruits and vegetables. Sprawling estates of an earlier day were subdivided again and again as land wore out under the burden of a tobacco economy. Many remnants yet remain of small, once vital communities where rural families gathered to check mail, catch up on the news, and trade for staples that they could not grow at home. Still, as a family of four, they found time along the way to participate, first as players and later as coaches and mentors, in youth baseball and softball organizations. Buddy and his wife Gail invested 49 of their years with the dairy aspect of their Tucked Away Dairy and Beef Farm before market changes forced them to make the tough decision to stop milking. “Buddy” Clark III, both grew up on the ancestral farming lands of the Clark clan near White Hall.
